Pancake Day Recipes & Activities for Children

Why do we have Pancake Day?

Pancake day (historically know as Shrove Tuesday) is considered the feast day before starting the 40 days of Lent from Ash Wednesday. The time of Lent between pancake day and Easter used to be considered a time of fasting and many people still choose to give up something for Lent. So, Shrove Tuesday was the last day before Lent to use up butter, eggs and fats. The best way to use all these ingredients was in pancakes!

When is Pancake Day?

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday. So, the date varies from year to year based on when Easter takes place. Pancake day always falls on a Tuesday between 3rd February and 9th March. This year, pancake day is celebrated on Tuesday 16th February 2021.

As well as, their mathematical skills by having them help you to keep score by using the stop watch. For example, can they see which time is quickest?

Food provides such a wonderful sensory experience. Provide your child with a number of classic pancake toppings and ask them to describe what they can see and smell before tasting them.
