Five fun Christmas songs for pre-schoolers

Christmas – it’s the most wonderful time of the year.

The festive period is magical, and fills all of our senses – whether that’s the sight of snow falling, the sounds of carol singers revelling on the streets, or the smell of Christmas bakes filling the home.

And it’s also so easy to get into the festive spirit. It could be through baking and crafting, reading Christmas stories or playing Christmas songs. Music in particular, is such a great tool for educating pre-schoolers.

So, whether you’re looking for some inspiration for that Christmas party playlist, or just fancy a sing-a-long at home with your little one, here are our five favourite Christmas songs.

1) Reindeer Pokey

A seasonal twist on the classic party song. Get your child moving in and out, and shaking it all about, as you do the Hokey Cokey – reindeer style! First, you’ll need to put your hooves in, then your antlers, followed by your tail, and finally your red nose. A great way to warm up this winter.

And you could even take it one step further with some quick-and-easy dressing up. Your child could become Rudolph with some face paints; alternatively buy (or even craft) an antler headband to really get into the spirit of the song!

2) 10 Little Elves

Practise counting from 1 to 10 with your little one, as Santa’s elves get ready for Christmas. Each verse repeats the number sequence, so it’s easy to remember. From sewing and painting, to sawing and hammering – those elves certainly are busy making toys in the grotto.

As well as counting the number sequence using your fingers, or any other props you have lying around, your child could also mirror the actions of the elves in each verse – and pretend they are making the toys too. This is a great opportunity to let their imagination run wild!

3) S-A-N-T-A

Moving on from numbers to the alphabet now, the popular song B-I-N-G-O has also been given a festive twist with this fun song. Like other well-known tunes, the verses are repeated, which helps build your child’s memory skills.

Not only is this a great song for children, as it gets them used to letter recognition, but it also gets your little one thinking – as they’ll need to remember which letters to miss out as the song progresses. When missing out letters, you could get your child to clap their hands, stamp their feet, say “shh” – or even ring a bell, to tie in to the seasonal vibes.

4) Christmas Pudding

Short songs with repetition and actions prove popular, and this festive favourite, based upon a traditional nursery rhyme ticks all the boxes. Christmas Pudding – and Christmas Cracker, for that matter – are great circle time songs. So, why not give them a go at your Christmas party? We’ve included the lyrics and actions below:

Christmas pudding, Christmas pudding [hold a bowl]
Steaming hot, steaming hot [blow on the bowl]
Sprinkle on the sugar, sprinkle on the sugar [sprinkle motion on the bowl]
Eat it up, eat it up [pretend to eat]
Christmas cracker, Christmas cracker [hold a cracker]
In your hand, in your hand [wave hand]
Hurry up and pull it, hurry up and pull it [pretend to pull]
It goes bang, it goes bang [shout bang, and clap hands]

The good thing about this song, is that the opportunities are endless and you could create different variations, using lots of Christmassy ideas. A great way to spark imagination and creativity.

5) Twinkle Twinkle Christmas Lights

We end with another classic nursery rhyme, that has been transformed by the magic of Christmas. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is a popular song with pre-schoolers and the tune is catchy as well as memorable, which is why we just had to include it on this list.

This is a great song to sing while Christmas crafting, or even when you get around to decorating your own tree at home. What different coloured lights can you see?

If you’re looking to put this song to action, get your little one to open and close their hand like a twinkle.
