It all makes Sense in the Garden
One of the last places you would expect to find a garden is on a balcony in a Kiddi Caru Day Nursery, but this is no ordinary garden, it’s a sensory garden for children under 5 years.
Kiddi Caru Nursery Manager, Sharon Baker thought of the idea after months of research. Different parts of the garden are devoted to a particular human sense – sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste. Through Sharon’s extension research, all the material used in the sensory garden would attract the children’s curiosity to explore the world around them using their senses - light reflectors dangle from the ceiling to catch the eye; water, sand and soil to touch; wind chimes and the sound of the waterfall to listen to; and the smell and taste of the window box herb garden.

Sharon comments, ’all the team at Kiddi Caru have a passionate belief in the benefits of quality nursery provision and the social, physical and educational development of the children in our care, as part of the pre-school curriculum the sensory garden will help develop the children’s skills and knowledge to understand the world in which they live and build a foundation for later learning.’
Introducing the benefits of Yoga at a young age
Introducing yoga to children at a young age has many benefits, it helps develop the children’s imagination and it gives the children the ability to move with confidence. Also it gives them the ability to concentrate and respect themselves and other children in the group.
Sharon Baker, Nursery Manager of Kiddi Caru in Peterborough, The Valley Park Centre off Sugar Way explains ‘staff who practice yoga with children will improve focus and self control. Children enjoy the yoga postures, songs and games so much, that there is significant improvement in nursery nurse/pupil relationship – an important factoring in maintaining a positive atmosphere in the nursery room.’
